Remember the communicators used in the original Star Trek series? Kirk could talk into a flip-phone styled device and the computer would answer his questions or perform requested actions. For those who’ve always dreamed of owning such a device, you’ll want to check out Google’s new Voice Actions feature available on Android 2.2 smartphones.
Announced today at a small media event, Google’s Voice actions allow users to simply speak commands (listed below) into their phone. The resulting actions, normally obtained through a series of touchscreen inputs, are then seamlessly executed by the phone. Anyone with a phone running Android 2.2 can immediately access this functionality by downloading Google Voice Search and Google Search Widget from the App Marketplace. The functionality further buttresses Google’s array of powerful apps for Android devices, which include Google Maps Navigation and its suite of easily synchronized productivity software like Gmail and Docs.
The currently available commands are listed below, as is a video demonstration of the technology. Additional commands are expected to be continuously added.
