Here WeGo: GPS Navigation Via Head-Up Displays

WeGo HUDDistracted driving is reaching epidemic proportions as the flood of electronic gadgets we supplement our lives with become increasingly portable and connected.   Between talking, texting, tuning satellite radio receivers, and entering GPS navigation instructions, drivers face ever-increasing odds of causing or being involved in automobile accidents.   While products and services do exist to prevent various cell phone distractions, they’re often limited in scope and functionality.   Given all the capability of modern technology, distraction-free operation has to be considered early in the design phase of new products which could be used while driving.

To combat the distraction of GPS devices, Springteq introduced its WeGo line of heads-up display based GPS devices at this year’s Computex show.   Instead of the typical LCD screen most GPS devices utilize, the WeGo projects its information onto the windshield of a car, directly in-line with the driver’s field of view.  The compact device, which universally mounts on the car’s dash board, uses patented reflective image display technology and a light sensor to eliminate the need for focusing or adjustment of the projected image’s brightness.  Projecting with a brightness of up to 13000 cd/m^2, the WeGo can operate clearly in broad daylight.

WeGo HUD 1By positioning directions and navigational information directly in front of the driver in a transparent and unobtrusive manner, instances of the driver’s eyes being taken off the road are reduced significantly, thus lessening the likelihood of accidents.   An RF remote attached to the car’s steering wheel serves as the WeGo’s interface device.  With a projected 4.5″ virtual image size, users will liken the WeGo to a typical 4.3″ LCD based GPS device (the WeGo mini projects a 3.5″ image).

Springteq is partnering with other companies to market and distribute the WeGo.  Check out the video below.
