In honor of today’s iPhone 4 release (already covered ad nauseum elsewhere), we’re going to highlight a cell phone that’s not quite as polished, feature-full, or smart as the iPhone 4, but still serves and important purpose. The GPS Tracker Phone For Kids is an overly simplified cell phone import capable of dialing up to four preset telephone numbers and one emergency services number, such as 911. The phone doesn’t have a number pad and pretty much prevents its user from doing anything other than placing voice calls to its presets.
The cool feature of the phone that many parents will appreciate is its GPS tracking capabilities. The phone can be set up to intermittently send a text message containing its location to a pre-defined number. In addition, a Geo-Fence can be established over which your kids cannot cross without the phone sending out notifications via text message. While there doesn’t appear to be a nicely packaged, real time user interface for tracking, such as those we’ve seen with dedicated child GPS tracking systems like this and this amongst others, the simplicity of this phone is its real asset.
At just $134, it’s relatively inexpensive for the piece of mind it affords. And since its Tri-Band GSM enabled, all you’ll have to do is pop in a SIM card from a provider like AT&T or T-Mobile to make the phone operational.
