CES2010: Day 2 Wrap Up

CES 2010Having visited the remainder of the South Hall and about half of the Central Hall today, it became apparent the this is where most of the bigger companies set up their booths.  Displays by Kodak, D-Link, Shuttle, and Asus, amongst many others offered a chance for hands-on trials of the latest these companies have to offer (check out the gallery on the CES2010 page).  While Kodak’s giant multi-touch cascading table and D-Link’s Boxee Box were big hits and very cool, the general recurring theme was that of 3D displays, eBook readers, and Netbooks.

The 3D display technology is really pretty amazing.  Everything from live action sports to animated movies to video games stand to benefit from the added depth of 3D.  While most 3D systems require the viewer to wear some type of polarizing or synchronizing eye wear,  there were some that didn’t, although they weren’t nearly at same quality level as those with glasses.  The transparency of the glasses could be improved upon.

The booths by some of the larger companies like Intel, Microsoft, and LG were like mini tech shows themselves with awe inspiring visuals in addition to their newest products.  As expected, the TV manufacturers tried to outdo each other in terms of TV viewing size and overall thickness.  LG boasted a 6.9mm thin 55″ LED backlit display.  Panasonic showed off a 152″ plasma.  Sony displayed its OLED TV.

Overall, I was impressed with the products brought to the show by these companies.  Tomorrow, I have to finish the rest of the Central Hall and do the peripheral exhibits located outside the convention center.  It will be my last day at CES and I expect to have finished visiting every company’s booth on my plan.
