Fortunately for most people reading this, GPS child tracking technology didn’t exist when we were kids.  For generations, parents just had to suffer through “wondering child syndrome” and teenagers breaking curfew.  Although devices such as the Amber Alert GPS 2G and Insignia Little Buddy Child Tracker offer today’s parents piece of mind, they’re in no way an alternative to responsible parenting.  But for those seeking other options in this expanding market, a company named Vision Localization Systems recently announced the Pikavu express locator, a GPS enabled wristwatch and portable touchscreen locator.

The watch, available in both blue and pink, comes with a safety lock on the band so your child cannot remove it (unless he’s the kid in the video below).  With water and impact resistance, it should withstand most of the abuse a kid could cause it.  Like the Amber Alert GPS 2G, it has a “panic” button that when pressed by the wearer for 5 seconds alerts the portable locator device.  The watch uses several cell phone signal triangulation techniques in addition to GPS to fix its location in situations where a GPS signal isn’t strong enough to reach the device, such as in dense urban areas or inside buildings.  It has a rechargeable battery life of about 4 days.

The 4.2″ touchscreen locator boasts a simple user interface for quickly locating and being directed to its paired watch (although a single locator can track several watches).  Sounds great, right?  What does all this peace of mind and security cost?  About $1500.  So maybe you should reconsider hiring that babysitter.
