Inconceivable! The Hubble Ultra Deep Field in 3D…

Hubble Ultra Deep FieldThe universe is big.  It’s bigger than any human can possibly imagine.  There isn’t really a frame of reference we can use to truly grasp its enormity.  Every speck of light we see when looking at the night sky is a star contained within our own Milky Way galaxy.  Beyond that exist billions of galaxies whose size and distance relative to the Earth is practically unfathomable.

To demonstrate this, astronomers using the aging but resilient Hubble Space Telescope photographed a thin sliver of seemingly empty sky to show what’s actually contained within that small representative sample.  Like looking at the millions of organisms in a drop of water under a microscope, the Hubble Ultra Deep Field revealed billions of specks of light otherwise invisible to the unaided human eye and each representing a galaxy itself containing billions of individual stars.

Now, scientists studying the approximate distance from our own galaxy to those in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field have created a 3D “fly through” of the galaxies in the Ultra Deep Field.  It’s a stunning demonstration of just how small we are in the universe.  Check out the video below.
