More signs of the DVD’s decline…

Best Buy LogoYesterday we reported that Paramount Studios has partnered with flash memory maker Kingston to offer movies and TV via USB flash drives and SD cards.  Now, in yet another sign of a gradual migration away the entertainment industry’s more than decade old DVD standard, Best Buy has announced a partnership with Sonic Solutions’ Roxio CinemaNow, which will allow retailer to stream new movie releases upon purchase directly to the consumer.

While Best Buy’s decision is obviously inline with the strong industry trend, the elimination of the DVD is by no means imminent.  Novel DVD rental business models, such as that of RedBox, are gaining significant market share while legacy competitors like Blockbuster struggle to re-establish themselves.  And for consumers who have invested billions in a DVD, and more recently Blu-Ray, based home theater infrastructure, the thought of their player’s sudden obsolescence will provide enough of a foundation upon which the DVD can stand for quite some time.
