For anyone not interested in eBook readers, the next couple of years are going to be especially brutal. With what seems like weekly product releases and steady technological advancement, these devices are poised to capture huge swaths of the declining print media empire. While most of the eBook readers we’ve seen thus far share similar functionality, an expected release from a company called Plastic Logic seeks greater penetration into business environments.
The Que proReader, a sleek 8.5″x11″ eBook reader with integrated touchscreen and plastic shatterproof display, is expected to sell alongside the Nook at Barnes & Noble stores. Having already allied with B&N for eBook content, the Que will support business oriented documents such those from Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, and more. Its market leading large screen should make reading business periodicals and newspapers more like reading the actual printed form of those media.
Many of the Que’s details are being withheld until its CES2010 release. Presumably access to the B&N powered Que store will be via some form of 3G wireless. But even without all the specific details, it’s clear that the differences between the Que and other readers like the much hyped Nook must be dramatic. Otherwise, why would Barnes & Noble allow them to sell alongside each other? We’ll check back on this one to find out.
