It seems like 2010 is going to be the breakout year for 3D capable TV’s. A perfect storm of content production and hardware integration promises to finally lift the technology from a cheap trick to mainstream habit. Already, companies such as Sony and Panasonic are demonstrating and producing 3D capable TV’s as described here and here. As we’ve discussed in these previous posts, the home theater based 3D experience of the future will require the viewer to don some form of polarizing or “active shutter” eyewear.
These are exciting developments for fixed viewing of 3D content worthy of continued monitoring. But as more of our content consumption becomes mobile, it’s important that solutions emerge to preserve the 3D experience in the mobile realm. Fortunately, PureDepth, a leading multi-layer display (MLD) technology company, today announced that it will “demonstrate a reference design of its newly developed small form factor MLD display technology for handheld mobile devices”.
Multi-layer display technology provides viewers the perception of 3D images and video without the need for supplemental eyewear. By stacking multiple display panels into a single monitor and applying complex software algorithms, each panel can display background or foreground image information as needed to create the perception of depth within the display. While the technology has already been implemented into large screen entertainment and digital signage based applications, its expense has limited widespread adoption.
Integrating the PureDepth display technology into mobile devices, such as personal media players and cell phones, could help quickly destroy the decades old association between TV and a specific, fixed location. We’ll eagerly watch out for the demo of this exciting mobile technology…
