Sony demonstrates wireless power transmission…

Sony Logo2New TechClickers may not realize how excited wireless power news makes us.  We were stoked even when the Wireless Power Consortium changed its logo!  So needless to say, Sony’s announcement today that it’s sustainably sending 60W of power over 20 inches of empty air has the TechClicker office abuzz.

Sony is using the relatively common magnetic resonance wireless power transmission technique, whereby a magnetic field is induced by a resonating electrically charged coil.  When a second, non charged coil is brought within the vicinity of the first coil’s electrically generated magnetic field, it too begins to resonate, thus producing harnessable electricity without physical wires linking the two source coils.

Wireless Power DiagramThe company is claiming transmission efficiencies of up to 80%, an impressive number, but one that leaves room for significant improvement.  But with consumer electronic device power consumption plummeting as the “green movement” gains traction, the minimum transmittable power threshold by which real wireless power products can be released into the wild may soon be here…and not a day too soon.
