Well here’s a interesting demonstration from some folks at the Georgia Institute of Technology (see the video below). While the students working on this may have earned an “A”, privacy advocates will surely prefer to see them fail. Claiming that they can overlay real time, dynamic details on Google Maps, the researchers are essentially ramping up to put spy satelite and GPS tracking companies out of business.
Using position and motion data obtained and extrapolated from live CCTV feeds via complex computer algorithms, the movements of individual people, cars, traffic, and weather patterns are overlaid onto highly detailed but traditionally static satellite pictures used by Google Maps. Unlike the anonymous cell phone tracking Google uses to gather real time traffic data for GPS devices and their new traffic feature within Google Maps, this type of tracking captures the motions of individual people and plots them in real time and space. The potential misuse of this is staggering, despite its benefits. Watch the demonstration below and let us know what you think.
