I’ve never been a huge fan of dual desktop display configurations. Placing two 17″ or larger LCD displays side by side with their bezels slicing right through my continuous Windows Desktop space is annoying, distracting, and takes up too much real desktop space.
I do like the emerging trend of smaller, USB based auxiliary displays, such as Mimo’s 720-S 7″ LCD, in which “always on” applications or toolbars can be docked for occasional glancing. With the announcement of DoubleSight’s line of smart USB monitors available in both 7″ and 9″ sizes, the market for these displays should continue to expand.
DoubleSight is touting their line of monitors as “the perfect accessory for Laptop and Netbook computers” – which may very well be the true given their portability and included carrying case. Offering both landscape and portrait viewing modes, the monitors are provided both power and video signal via USB connection to the computer. While still relatively steeply priced at $119 for the 7″ version and $139 for the 9″ version, considering a full size desktop LCD can be had for around $150, the physical space saved by employing one of these may very well be worth the extra cost.
