To Print the Internet?

InkAh yes, we’ve all asked them…those timeless questions everyone ponders at some point, like “How many stars are in the universe?” or ”How many grains of sand are on the beach?”  Now the Internet, essentially a universe of its own, has spawned a new set of imponderables to consider, such as “How many inkjet cartridges would be consumed if it were printed in it’s entirety?”

The answer to that, 45 million inkjet cartridges, is considered here.  The comparison extrapolates that number of cartridges to 500,000 liters of ink.  Since inkjet ink probably the most expensive liquid on the planet costing up to $2200 per liter, I calculate that it would cost approximately $1.1 Billion to print the Internet.

While this is a fun exercise, I hardly believe that printing the entire content of the Internet can even be considered.  While the question’s source doesn’t provide any facts or figures regarding the predictions or assumptions taken, I highly suspect that it’s estimate is significantly below the true Internet printing requirements.  Needless to say, it’s an interesting concept.

One Response to “To Print the Internet?”

Why oh why did you have to actually put the cost in writing/typing? Even though I refill my own it’s still not at all cheap, especially if I happen to say bump the ink off the counter or table or wherever onto something else never meant to be covered in ink??!!!! Why is it so bloody expensive, anyway? Because they’ve essentially got a run on the market and we’re not making the ink ourselves at home?
Along those lines why is it that Asurion is the ONLY insurance company for our cellaphones?

I’d love to know the answer to both…..
