In case anyone was wondering about the validity of 3D TV after Sony’s release yesterday, Philips and Panasonic today both announced plans to begin incorporating high definition 3D technology into some of their upcoming products. The announcements came at the IFA 2009 consumer electronics show in Berlin.
Panasonic is launching a cross country promotional tour in which three tractor trailers each fitted with 30 seat 3D theaters will attend industry trade shows, retail stores, universities, and athletic events through March 2010. The tour will educate consumers and industry professionals about the technology. Philips is citing a need for more 3D content before it scales production of its prototypes.
Like the inception of high definition TV, 3D TV will likely require several years to gain popularity and the necessary growth in consumer and content producer infrastructure. While the 3D effect is finally impressive enough to sustain continued content generation, manufacturers need to quickly bring their products into the mainstream and hasten the technology’s market saturation.
