We recently posted news of LG’s pending release of large format OLED TVs, in which it was suggested that anyone currently considering buying a new TV may want to wait for that technology to fully materialize (and come down in price). Well, today Sony, adding to its slew of recent new product releases in what could easily be called its make.believe “Miracle Week”, announcedthat it plans to begin selling 3D capable Bravia TVs in 2010. Could this be yet another reason to stall that purchase?
3D video technology has been around in some form or another for decades. After the technology’s red and blue cellophane heyday in the 1950′s (and this year’s Superbowl commercials), consumers abandoned its poor quality. Today, advancements in projectors, TVs, and the glasses worn by the viewer allow the subject material to seemingly burst through the air.
Sony’s 3D Bravia TVs will use a “frame sequential display and active-shutter glass Systems”. In addition, Sony’s “proprietary high frame rate technology will enable the reproduction of full High Definition” 3D movies. This means that Sony’s glasses won’t just be polarized pieces of plastic…each lens will actually flicker in precise time with the image being presented to create the 3D effect.
Obviously, a 3D enabled television without 3D content is about as useful as a picture of a steak to a starving man, but Sony is providing professional 3D equipment to movie producers in an effort to grow the available library of 3D material. Also, the company will enable its other product lines, such as Blu-ray players and PlayStation, with 3D compatibility.
So are we ready for real 3D viewing experiences? Sony seems to think so, and I’d definately tend to agree with them.
