Ah…wireless power. No more power cords. No more surge protectors. No more wall warts. Am I dreaming? Maybe not since today the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced the release of its 0.95 technical specification and logo. The group aims to promote and standardize the use of wireless power transmission for charging electronic devices that use less than 5 Watts of power. A device with the WPC logo would ensure universal interoperability with chargers similarly branded. Adding to the legitimacy of the group’s standards is the fact that companies such as Phillips, Duracell, Texas Instruments, and Samsung are members.
While true wireless power transmission capable of making my dreams come true is years away, this is an encouraging step.
